North Korean crypto hackers stole $1.7b in 2022
North Korea's total exports in 2020 were $142m. That means that crypto hacking to the tune of $1.7b in 2022 was a serious business for the regime. The regime is in complete denial that they are involved in crypto hacking.
North Korea has heavy sanctions and needs money to finance the development of its nuclear arsenal, fund domestic issues and also fund the extravagant lifestyle of its supreme leader, Kim Jon Un.
Hacked crypto is laundered through "mixers". Mixers blend crypto from users to obscure the origins of the funds. In addition, stolen crypto is laundered through brokers in China and NFTs (non-fungible tokens).
It is my understanding that Kim Jon Un provides excellent accommodation for the individuals that are involved in the crypto hacking and there are privileges attached to the job.
It is not if but when quantum computing could render Bitcoin totally worthless. In the future, quantum computing will break much of todays encryption.
